Where Are Shenmue I and II Save Files Located?
Shenmue I and II split saves into sm1saves and sm2saves folders under one shared Steam userdata folder.
Last updated
Shenmue I & II keeps Steam saves in userdata\<SteamID>\758330\remote, split into sm1saves and sm2saves with a Settings folder each. Steam Cloud syncs the whole remote tree, so one copy preserves both games.
The split matters for transfers. Shenmue 1 completion carries into Shenmue 2 through the game's own carryover, not by moving files between the folders. Linux uses the same userdata tree directly, since cloud saves bypass the Proton prefix. Keep store builds apart and copy folders whole with the game shut down.
Where Shenmue I & II stores this, by platform
<Steam>\userdata\<SteamID>\758330\remote\sm1saves
Both games plus per-game Settings under one remote folder with Steam Cloud. Carryover runs in-game, not by file moves. Microsoft Store builds use their Packages container instead.
~/.steam/steam/userdata/<SteamID>/758330/remote/sm1saves
Cloud saves live in the Linux userdata tree under the same app ID. Copy the sm1saves or sm2saves folder with the game closed.
Frequently asked questions
How do I install a downloaded Shenmue save?
Copy the matching sm1saves or sm2saves folder into userdata 758330 remote. Saves only load in their own game's slot list, and Shenmue 1 clears can carry forward into Shenmue 2 through the in-game transfer.
Do Steam and Game Pass saves mix?
The Microsoft Store build uses its Packages container instead of userdata. Each store reads only its own tree, so a Steam file in the Packages folder never appears.
