Where Does Shift Browser Store Data?

Where the Shift browser keeps profiles, workspaces and login data on Windows.

Last updated

Shift keeps its Chromium style User Data under a ShiftData folder in LocalAppData: Default profile with Login Data and Local State for the encryption key, plus workspaces and extension data beside them. The app installs per user without admin rights.

Uninstalls leave ShiftData behind, which surprises people cleaning up. Delete that folder only for a true fresh start, and confirm Sync is on first or workspaces go with it.

Where Shift stores this, by platform

Windows
%LOCALAPPDATA%\ShiftData\User Data\

Chromium layout with Default profile, Login Data and Local State key file. Install itself sits under LocalAppData Programs. Close Shift fully before copying or deleting. Survivies uninstalls, so remove by hand for clean slate.

Frequently asked questions

Shift shows a blank screen. How do I reset it?

Turn on Sync under Account and Preferences first, since a full reset wipes local cache. Support documents the reset as the fix for blank screens and persistent crashes, with extensions and passwords reimported after.

How do I move Shift to a new PC?

Copy the ShiftData folder with Shift fully closed. Cookies and extension state travel with it, though OS keychain bound passwords may need fresh logins on the new machine.
