Where Is the SilverBullet Space Folder?

SilverBullet space folder and database paths for Docker and bare metal installs, plus where attachments live.

Last updated

SilverBullet keeps your notes as plain Markdown files in a single space folder. In Docker that folder is /space by default, mapped to whatever host directory you pass with -v. A bare metal install uses whatever path you set in SB_FOLDER.

The search index lives in a SQLite file called .silverbullet.db inside the space folder unless you override it with SB_KV_DB. Point that variable elsewhere if your space sits on slow spinning disks. Attachments sit alongside your notes, so backing up the space folder covers nearly everything.

Where SilverBullet stores this, by platform

Linux
/space

Default inside the container. On the host this is whatever directory you mapped, for example -v ./space:/space or -v /home/user/space:/space. Raw .md files live here and can be edited outside SilverBullet.

Linux
/space/.silverbullet.db

Created automatically on first run. Move it with the SB_KV_DB variable and remember to bind mount the new location in Docker, or the database will vanish with the container.

Frequently asked questions

how do i find which host folder my SilverBullet space uses

Check the SB_FOLDER environment variable or your docker run -v mapping. The left side of the colon is the host folder. That host folder holds every Markdown file.

can i move the SilverBullet database outside the space folder

Set SB_KV_DB to a path outside the space, for example /var/lib/silverbullet/silverbullet.db, and bind mount it in Docker. This helps when the space folder sits on a slow NAS or spinning disk.
