Where Are Smalland: Survive the Wilds Save Files Located?

Smalland splits saves into Players and Worlds folders under a SMALLAND directory. Windows path plus the Linux Proton equivalent.

Last updated

Smalland save data lives in a SMALLAND folder in LocalAppData, all caps. Inside SaveGames you get two halves: Players for your character and tree, Worlds for everything built outside it.

That split is practical. Players who host online back up both folders before a session, then check the tree first on return. Test branch saves get their own public_test folder, which once swallowed saves after an update until players moved files by hand.

Where Smalland: Survive the Wilds stores this, by platform

Windows
%LOCALAPPDATA%\SMALLAND\Saved\SaveGames

Players and Worlds subfolders hold character and world data separately. Copy the whole SaveGames folder for backups, and keep Steam Cloud in mind since it can restore stale copies over your manual ones.

Linux
~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/768200/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Local/SMALLAND/Saved/SaveGames

Same Players and Worlds layout inside the Proton prefix for app ID 768200. Flatpak Steam installs nest it under ~/.var/app/com.valvesoftware.Steam instead.

Frequently asked questions

how do i back up Smalland before playing online?

Copy both the Players and Worlds folders elsewhere. When you finish, compare before overwriting your backup. The players folder alone will not restore your buildings.

where did my Smalland saves go after an update?

Check for a second folder such as Documents Smalland or a new public_test directory inside SaveGames. Updates have created parallel folders before, leaving the real saves one level away.
