Where Does SMAPI Store Mods and Configs?
Where SMAPI keeps Stardew Valley mods, configs and logs.
Last updated
SMAPI centers on the Mods folder inside the Stardew Valley install: one subfolder per mod with its manifest, assets and config.json. The loader itself lives in smapi-internal beside it with logs per run.
Steam, GOG and Xbox paths differ only in prefix; the tail stays identical. Delete a mod config.json while closed to regenerate its defaults. Keep the whole Mods tree out of cloud sync to dodge locked file errors.
Where SMAPI stores this, by platform
<Stardew Valley>\Mods\
One subfolder per mod with manifest and config.json. Loader config and run logs sit in smapi-internal. Launch through SMAPI for mods to load. Back up the Mods tree before game updates.
<Stardew Valley>/Mods/
Same Mods tail under the macOS/Linux game install. Use the in-game mod options or edit config.json while closed. Logs land beside the loader for crash triage.
Frequently asked questions
How do I install a Stardew Valley mod?
Open the Mods folder in the game directory and drop the unpacked mod folder inside, then launch through SMAPI. Each mod gains a config.json on first run for tuning.
A mod broke after updating. Where do I look?
Read smapi-internal/Mods/SMAPI/config.json for loader options and the latest SMAPI log for load errors. Red text lines name the failing mod and reason, which beats guessing.
