Where Does SmartGit Store Settings?

SmartGit versions its settings dir per major release. Windows uses syntevo/SmartGit; Linux uses ~/.config/smartgit.

Last updated

SmartGit keeps per-user settings in a versioned directory: %APPDATA%\syntevo\SmartGit<major> on Windows, ~/Library/Preferences/SmartGit/<major> on macOS, ~/.config/smartgit/<major> (older: ~/.smartgit) on Linux. Inside sit preferences, repository lists and grouping, accelerators, bugtracker integrations, encrypted passwords, logs, and downloaded updates. Major versions never share, so side-by-side installs stay independent.

Company fleets can seed a default/ dir beside the install that first starts copy into user dirs. Portable bundles relocate everything via smartgit.settings VM options. Reset surgically: delete one YAML/XML file for one subsystem rather than the whole dir, and always with SmartGit exited since it writes on close.

Where SmartGit stores this, by platform

Windows
%APPDATA%\syntevo\SmartGit<major-version>

preferences.yml, repositories.yml, accelerators, passwords, logs, updates. Versioned per major; portable bundles relocate via smartgit.settings. Reset per file with the app closed.

Linux
~/.config/smartgit/<major-version>

Same versioned layout under XDG config (legacy ~/.smartgit). VM options file smartgit.vmoptions sits beside it for heap and settings-dir overrides. macOS mirrors under Preferences.

Frequently asked questions

how do i migrate smartgit to a new machine

Copy the versioned settings dir (preferences.yml, repositories.yml, accelerators, passwords) with SmartGit closed. Repos themselves stay in place; only SmartGit's index of them travels. Match major versions; dirs do not share across majors.

how do i reset smartgit settings

Delete that file with SmartGit closed (preferences.yml in new versions, settings.xml in old). The app regenerates defaults on next start. Narrower resets delete single files: accelerators for shortcuts, repositories for the repo list.
