Where Does SmokePing Store Data?
SmokePing stores RRD time series in var lib and config in etc smokeping. Graphs render from RRD files.
Last updated
SmokePing has two halves. Config in /etc/smokeping defines targets, probes, and alerts. Time series data in /var/lib/smokeping holds the RRD files that draw the graphs.
Debian and Ubuntu split these paths by default. The web UI reads the same RRD files. To move a SmokePing install, copy both trees. Config without RRD gives empty graphs. Graph history only continues when RRD files stay with the matching target config, so move both together. Check probe permissions after restore, since ping and DNS checks fail without the right capabilities.
Where SmokePing stores this, by platform
/etc/smokeping/config
Target, probe, and alert config. Main file is config with targets.d includes. Back up before upgrades.
/var/lib/smokeping
RRD latency history. Copy with SmokePing stopped for consistency. Keep permissions for the smokeping user.
Frequently asked questions
how do i migrate smokeping
Copy /etc/smokeping/config plus /var/lib/smokeping on Debian. Keep RRD files together with the config. Restart smokeping after restore and check target reachability.
do i need to back up smokeping rrd files
RRD files hold latency history and cannot be rebuilt from logs. Back them up on schedule. Config alone only restores targets, not history. Schedule copies with the daemon paused for consistent history.
