Where Does SMPlayer Store Settings?
SMPlayer keeps smplayer.ini plus playlists in one config folder. The Windows, Linux, and portable spots.
Last updated
SMPlayer keeps its configuration in a single folder headed by smplayer.ini. Playlists, favorites, radio and TV lists, plus per file settings under file_settings, share the folder. Deleting smplayer.ini while the app is closed resets everything to defaults.
On Windows that folder is %USERPROFILE%\.smplayer. Linux uses ~/.config/smplayer. Portable builds write into a config subfolder (older ones beside the exe), which keeps USB installs self contained. Help, then Open configuration folder jumps to the live one on any build.
Where SMPlayer stores this, by platform
%USERPROFILE%\.smplayer
smplayer.ini plus playlists and file_settings here. Portable uses config beside the install. If smplayer.ini sits next to the exe it wins over this folder.
~/.config/smplayer
Same file set under XDG config home. Reset by deleting smplayer.ini while closed. The Help menu opener resolves packaged and Flatpak remaps.
Frequently asked questions
how do i reset smplayer settings
Close SMPlayer and delete smplayer.ini from the folder above. Per file resume data in file_settings survives that, so clear it too for a truly fresh start.
how do i run smplayer portably
Use the portable build, which writes into its own config folder. Copy that folder between machines to migrate. The installed build ignores it and uses the user profile path instead.
