Where Does Snagit Store Captures?

Snagit files unsaved captures as .SNAG files in a hidden DataStore, while finished saves go wherever you put them.

Last updated

Snagit draws a hard line between captured and saved. Fresh captures sit unsaved in the Library, backed by .SNAG files in a hidden DataStore folder. Saving exports them to real image files wherever you choose and clears the hidden copy.

The DataStore is TechSmith's business, not a folder to browse. Moving or renaming it outside the Editor orphans the Library view even with files intact. Treat unsaved captures as drafts and save the keepers promptly.

Where Snagit stores this, by platform

Windows
%LOCALAPPDATA%\TechSmith\Snagit\DataStore

Unsaved captures live here as .SNAG files in Snagit 2021 and earlier. Move it only through Editor Preferences, Library, never by hand.

Windows
%USERPROFILE%\Documents\Snagit

Finished Library location defaults here on Windows and Pictures on Mac. Change it in the Editor when the drive fills.

Frequently asked questions

How do I move unsaved captures to a new PC?

Use the Editor's export for automatically stored files, which rehouses them properly in the Library. Raw folder copies restore only through the same export flow, never by dropping files back in place.

Can I move the Datastore off a full drive?

Open Editor Preferences, Library, and point the Datastore at the new disk. The setting exists from version 12.4 onward. Snagit 2022 and later changed the storage model, so version matters here.
