Where Does Snapper Store Snapshots and Config?

Snapper keeps per subvolume configs in /etc/snapper and snapshots in .snapshots. How the two link up.

Last updated

Snapper manages one config per snapshotted subvolume in /etc/snapper/configs, commonly root for /. Each file sets timeline, number cleanup, and user access for that tree. The master list of enabled configs sits in /etc/sysconfig/snapper under SNAPPER_CONFIGS.

Snapshots themselves live in a .snapshots directory inside the snapshotted subvolume, so / gets /.snapshots. Never hand edit the configs dir without updating the sysconfig list; use snapper create-config and delete-config so both halves stay consistent.

Where Snapper stores this, by platform

Linux
/etc/snapper/configs

One file per config (root, home, ...). Snapshots for / land in /.snapshots. Keep /etc/sysconfig/snapper SNAPPER_CONFIGS in sync; the CLI commands do this automatically.

Frequently asked questions

how do i enable snapshots for home with snapper

Run snapper -c home create-config /home, then tune TIMELINE_CREATE and limits in /etc/snapper/configs/home. YaST skips /home at install, so this manual step is expected.

can snapper store snapshots on another disk

Not by default; snapshots live in .snapshots inside their own subvolume. A custom SNAPSHOTS_PATH exists in newer builds but same volume rules apply. Plan disk space per subvolume instead.
