Where Does Kopia Store Config and Cache?
Kopia keeps repository.config per OS plus a hashed cache dir. The defaults and the flags that move them.
Last updated
Kopia tracks each repository connection in a configuration file: ~/.config/kopia/repository.config on Linux, ~/Library/Application Support/kopia/repository.config on macOS, %APPDATA%\kopia\repository.config on Windows. It records storage type, credentials pointers, and the cache directory.
Cache defaults alongside it under the OS cache home with a per repo hash suffix. Override with --config-file and --cache-directory (or KOPIA_CACHE_DIRECTORY). KopiaUI pins its own config path, so CLI overrides like KOPIA_CONFIG_PATH do not move the GUI.
Where Kopia stores this, by platform
~/.config/kopia/repository.config
Connection params in JSON. Cache at ~/.cache/kopia/<hash>. Override per command with --config-file and --cache-directory; the env var persists the cache move.
~/Library/Application Support/kopia/repository.config
Same JSON layout in Application Support. Cache under ~/Library/Caches/kopia/<hash>. Finder hides ~/Library, so use Go to Folder.
%APPDATA%\kopia\repository.config
Same layout in Roaming with cache under %LOCALAPPDATA%\kopia\<hash>. KopiaUI writes repository.config here regardless of CLI env overrides.
Frequently asked questions
how do i back up kopia itself
Copy repository.config for connection details, but guard the repository password separately since the file alone does not include it. Cache rebuilds from the repo, so it is expendable.
kopia cache is huge, can i move it
Yes. Reconnect or run with --cache-directory on a roomy disk, or export KOPIA_CACHE_DIRECTORY. The path persists into repository.config for future runs.
