Where Does Snort Keep Your Nostr Keys?
Snort is a web client, so keys live in the browser or a signer extension, never on a Snort server.
Last updated
Snort runs in the browser with no accounts of its own. Login happens by pasting an nsec into local storage or by connecting a signer extension like Alby or nos2x. Either way the key stays on your machine.
Back up the nsec on paper or in a password manager before trusting any device. Clearing site data logs Snort out instantly. Extension signers keep the key out of page storage entirely, which survives cache clears.
Where Snort stores this, by platform
Browser localStorage or signer extension (nsec)
Paste nsec only on machines you control. Prefer a NIP-07 extension so pages request signatures instead of holding the key.
Browser localStorage or signer extension (nsec)
Same browser side model. Export nsec from settings if Snort shows it, then store offline. Relay lists are separate and easy to rebuild.
Browser localStorage or signer extension (nsec)
No server copy exists to recover from. Losing the nsec without backup means losing the identity everywhere, not just in Snort.
Frequently asked questions
How do I back up my Snort login?
Save the nsec offline in two places. Snort cannot recover it for you. A password manager plus paper covers most loss scenarios.
Should I paste nsec into Snort directly?
A signer extension is safer when available. Direct paste works but leaves the key in site storage until you clear it. Use paste only on personal devices.
