Where Does Windows Update Store Downloaded Files?

Windows Update stages downloads in C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download, safe to clear when updates stall.

Last updated

Windows Update downloads into a SoftwareDistribution folder before installing anything. When updates hang or loop, that staging area holds the corrupt payload everyone tells you to delete.

Clearing it is safe with the update service stopped. Windows rebuilds the folder and re-downloads what it still needs. The DataStore database beside it tracks update history, so wiping the whole tree also resets that log.

Where Windows stores this, by platform

Windows
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

Staged update payloads. Stop the Windows Update service, empty this folder, and restart the service to force a fresh download. Needs administrator rights.

Yes, with the Windows Update service stopped. Only staged installers live there. The service recreates the folder and downloads pending updates again.

Stop the update service, empty SoftwareDistribution\Download, and restart the service. If it still stalls, the DataStore database in the parent folder is the next reset target.
