Where Are Windows Update Downloads Stored?

Windows Update stages downloads in a Download folder under SoftwareDistribution. It is safe to clear when updates misbehave.

Last updated

Every Windows Update payload lands in the SoftwareDistribution tree before it installs. The Download subfolder is the staging area, and on a healthy machine it drains itself after each patch cycle. When updates stall or the drive fills, this is the folder everyone points at.

It sits under the Windows directory, so you need administrator rights to touch it. Never rename the whole SoftwareDistribution folder on a whim. Clearing just the Download contents with the service stopped is the documented recovery move.

Where Windows stores this, by platform

Windows
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

Staging area for update payloads. Stop the Windows Update service first, delete the contents (keep the folder), then restart the service and check for updates again.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to delete the SoftwareDistribution Download folder?

Yes, with the update service stopped. Stop the Windows Update service, delete the contents of Download (not the folder itself), and restart the service. The next update check rebuilds what it needs.

Should I use Disk Cleanup instead?

Start with Disk Cleanup or Settings storage cleanup, which handle the same files through a supported path. Manual deletion is the fallback when the update service itself is stuck.
