Where Does Sonos Store Favorites and Playlists?

Sonos favorites and playlists live in your Sonos account and on the speakers. Your own music library stays on your server or shared folder.

Last updated

Sonos favorites are pointers, not files. Songs, stations, and playlists you save live in your Sonos account and resolve against the speakers at play time. That is why a favorite created on iOS appears on Android seconds later, and why local-library entries grey out when the index drifts.

Your own music files never move into Sonos at all. The local library stays on a NAS or shared folder you index from the app, and speakers stream from the share. Back up the share itself. The phone app holds only settings and cache, so reinstalls are safe once favorites sync.

Where Sonos stores this, by platform

Android
/storage/emulated/0/Android/data/com.sonos.sonoscontroller/files

App settings and cache only; favorites live server-side in your account. Exact folder names may vary by version. Keep the music share backed up separately; the app never holds your audio.

iOS
Sonos app storage (Settings > iPhone Storage)

Same account model as Android. Queue, favorites, and playlists sync across controllers. Your audio files stay on the indexed share, never in the iOS container.

Frequently asked questions

How do I save the queue as a playlist?

Open the queue from Now Playing, tap the three-dot menu at the top of the queue screen, and choose Save as Sonos Playlist. The option rolls out gradually, so update the app and speaker firmware first. Reinstalling the app surfaces it on stubborn devices.

Why are my favorites greyed out?

Re-add them. Local-library favorites break across the app rebuilds, showing greyed out on Android while streaming favorites keep working. Delete the dead entries and save them again from the freshly indexed library. The queue save trick above preserves the rest.
