Where Does Sourcegraph Cody Store Settings?

Sourcegraph Cody settings in VS Code, JetBrains and the repo level .cody config, across desktop OSes.

Last updated

Cody stores almost nothing of its own outside your editor. Server endpoint, codebase and model choices live in VS Code settings.json at User scope, with per folder overrides in .vscode/settings.json. Team review rules live separately in the repo.

Chat history stays inside the editor extension storage until you export it. Custom commands ship as JSON in the repo so the team shares them. Check settings.json first when Cody points at the wrong instance.

Where Sourcegraph Cody stores this, by platform

Windows
%APPDATA%\Code\User\settings.json

User scope settings. Workspace overrides live in <project>/.vscode/settings.json. Extension chat data sits under Code/User/globalStorage. Use Settings Sync to carry it between machines.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/Code/User/settings.json

Same settings.json layout as Windows. JetBrains installs keep Cody config inside the IDE settings sync instead. Repo level .cody/commands.json applies to every OS.

Linux
~/.config/Code/User/settings.json

Follows XDG config home. Custom command JSON in the repo root works on all three platforms without OS specific paths.

Frequently asked questions

How do I point Cody at my Sourcegraph instance?

Set cody.serverEndpoint and cody.codebase in settings.json. That pins the instance and the repository name without URLs. Workspace settings override User settings for that folder.

Where is Cody chat history saved?

Use Export in Chat History. It writes the full conversation as JSON for support or custom command work. Delete chats from the same History menu when done.
