Where Does Aider Store Chat History?
Aider writes chat history as Markdown files inside each project folder. Filenames, the config search order and input history.
Last updated
Aider stores history per project, not in a central folder. Every repository you work in collects its own Markdown transcript next to the code it describes. Move the project and the history moves with it.
The transcript defaults to .aider.chat.history.md with input history in .aider.input.history beside it. Configuration follows the same project first logic: Aider looks for .aider.conf.yml in the git root, then the working directory, then your home folder.
Where Aider stores this, by platform
<project-dir>\.aider.chat.history.md
Markdown transcript of the session, shareable as a gist. Override the name with --chat-history-file or AIDER_CHAT_HISTORY_FILE. Config is .aider.conf.yml, found in git root, working dir or %USERPROFILE% in that order.
<project-dir>/.aider.chat.history.md
Same per project files on Mac. Input recall comes from .aider.input.history in the same folder. Pass --restore-chat-history to pick up where a previous session stopped.
<project-dir>/.aider.chat.history.md
Same layout on Linux. Model tweaks live in .aider.model.settings.yml and metadata in .aider.model.metadata.json, both beside the transcript.
Frequently asked questions
where is the Aider config file?
Aider searches .aider.conf.yml in the git root first, then the current directory, then your home directory. Note the extension is yml, and yaml will not be picked up.
how do i share an Aider session?
Copy the Markdown from .aider.chat.history.md into a gist, then append the gist URL to aider.chat/share/?mdurl= for a readable terminal style rendering of the whole session.
