Where Does Start9 Store Data on Linux?

Start9 EmbassyOS data on Linux, including embassy-data and service volumes.

Last updated

Start9 keeps system state and service data under /embassy-data on EmbassyOS machines. Backups run through the UI into backup targets.

Service data lives in per service volumes inside that tree. Copying raw disk files by hand is not the supported path. Use Embassy backups for migration and keep OS plus services on matching versions.

Linux
/embassy-data/

System plus service data (package volumes, tor keys, backups staging). Manage through Embassy UI > System > Backups. Exact subfolders may vary by OS version, so prefer UI backups over rsync.

Frequently asked questions

How do I back up Start9?

Create an Embassy backup in the UI to USB or network storage, then verify it before wiping. Restoring means flashing the same OS line and importing that backup.

Can I copy Start9 service files by hand?

Not reliably. Permissions plus Tor identity plus database state travel together through UI backups. Manual copies often boot but lose service health. Use the supported flow.
