Where Does Status Store Messages and Keys?
Status keeps profiles, keys and chat history in its app data folder on desktop, sealed in the container on mobile.
Last updated
Status pairs a crypto wallet with a messenger, so its data folder carries extra weight: chat history plus key material for both. Losing it without a recovery phrase means losing the account, not just the logs.
Desktop builds store everything under an app named folder per OS. Mobile seals the same contents in the app container. Either way the recovery phrase outranks every file backup.
Where Status stores this, by platform
%APPDATA%\Status
Profiles, keys and message history. Back up only with the app closed, and treat copies as highly sensitive. If the folder name differs by build, sort %APPDATA% by date after launching.
~/Library/Application Support/Status
Same contents. Go to Folder in Finder reaches it. Export or write down the recovery phrase separately; files alone are a fragile backup.
~/.config/Status
Same layout. Permissions should stay owner only, since key material sits beside ordinary chat cache in this tree.
/data/data/im.status.ethereum
Private storage, reachable only with root or backup tooling. Confirm the package on the Play Store listing if absent. Logging in fresh with the recovery phrase beats file surgery.
/var/mobile/Containers/Data/Application/<guid>/Documents
Per install container path. An encrypted device backup preserves it. Recovery phrase login is the supported migration route.
Frequently asked questions
how do i move status to a new device
Use the recovery phrase to log in fresh. It restores the account and contacts. File copies work on desktop in a pinch but carry key material that must stay private.
is it safe to delete the status data folder
Only with the recovery phrase saved. Deleting without it destroys the keys and the account with them. With the phrase, reinstalling and logging in rebuilds everything.
