Where Does Stremio Store Cache and Settings?

Stremio splits server-settings.json from a bulky stream cache. The Windows and Linux paths plus moving it.

Last updated

Stremio server data lives in a stremio-server folder. On Windows that is %APPDATA%\stremio\stremio-server with server-settings.json beside the cache. On Linux it is ~/.stremio/stremio-server/stremio-cache, a legacy of older ~/.stremio-server paths.

The cache balloons with streams, so the settings file exposes cacheRoot (sometimes called cacheSize) to relocate it. Symlinking the cache folder to a big disk is the folk fix when the GUI option does not stick across reboots. Server settings and cache travel separately when migrating.

Where Stremio stores this, by platform

Windows
%APPDATA%\stremio\stremio-server

server-settings.json here with cacheRoot to relocate. Cache defaults inside the same tree. Create the folder manually if a fresh install has not generated it yet.

Linux
~/.stremio/stremio-server

Cache at stremio-cache inside. Symlink that folder to bulk storage to escape small home partitions. The app ignores XDG cache dirs, hence the home clutter issue reports.

Frequently asked questions

how do i move the stremio cache

Edit cacheRoot in server-settings.json to the new path, or symlink stremio-cache to the big disk. Restart Stremio and confirm the new location fills. The setting has a history of reverting, so verify after reboot.

what do i back up to move stremio

Copy server-settings.json for identity and prefs. Skip the cache itself; it refills. Recreate any symlinks on the new machine rather than copying them blindly.
