Stronghold 2 stores saves as .sh2 files in Documents\Stronghold 2\Saves, with profiles and campaign progress in Profiles beside it. Firefly's own help center confirms the layout and documents an options_override.xml redirect for machines where Documents is unreachable.
Steam Cloud covers the default folder and nothing else. A custom override path silently drops out of sync, which surprises everyone who relocates and then wonders where the cloud copies went. Keep the default path when sync matters; override only when saving fails outright.

The game crashes on launch after a hardware change. What now?
Delete Stronghold2.GraphicsSettings.xml in the Profiles folder. The game redetects hardware on next launch. Your saves and campaign progress survive; only display settings reset.
