Where Is Sudo for Windows Configured?
Sudo for Windows stores its mode in Settings with Group Policy override in the registry, and needs 24H2 or later.
Last updated
Sudo for Windows keeps its configuration in the Settings app. The toggle and the three run modes live under System and Advanced. There is no sudoers file; elevation prompts go through User Account Control instead.
Enterprises override the same setting through Group Policy, which writes the vendor registry key. Policy wins over the Settings UI whenever both exist. The sudo binary itself ships in System32 on supported builds.
Where Sudo for Windows stores this, by platform
C:\Windows\System32\sudo.exe
System binary present on 24H2 and later. Mode comes from Settings, System, Advanced, or sudo config in an elevated console. Policy key overrides local choice.
Frequently asked questions
How do I enable Sudo for Windows?
Open Settings, System, Advanced, and flip Enable sudo on. Pick inline, input-closed, or new-window mode there. The same choice works from an elevated console with sudo config.
Can I enable sudo on Windows 10 or 23H2?
It cannot. Sudo ships with Windows 11 version 24H2 and later only. Older releases lack the binary entirely, so no setting or registry value enables it there. Update first.
