Where Does Syphon Store Chats?
Syphon keeps chats in AES-256 encrypted app-private storage. Alpha status means paths shift; export early and often.
Last updated
Syphon stores chats locally in encrypted app-private storage on every platform (Android, iOS, Linux, Windows, macOS builds all exist, desktop trailing mobile). Everything is AES-256 encrypted at rest with Olm/Megolm for E2EE chats, presence strictly opt-in, and no analytics to reconstruct from.
The alpha caveat matters more than any path. Syphon warns it is not ready for everyday use, and storage layouts shift between releases, so any exact filename here would rot fast. Keep the app updated, export what matters through in-app flows where offered, and assume reinstalls start empty. Privacy-first also means recovery-last.
Where Syphon stores this, by platform
(app-private storage, encrypted)
Encrypted chat store inside the app sandbox, unreachable without root. Layout shifts across alpha releases, so version-pin before scripting anything. Export through the app where offered.
Frequently asked questions
where is the syphon database file
Inside each platform app sandbox, encrypted at rest with AES-256. Mobile sandboxes are unreachable without root; desktop builds vary by version. Treat in-app export (where available) as the migration path, not file copies.
is there really no syphon cloud backup
Correct, and by design. Syphon minimizes metadata and keeps no analytics, so there is little server side to recover from. Open-alpha software plus no cloud backup means local loss is final; keep exports elsewhere.
