Where Is the Syslinux Config File?
Where Syslinux looks for its config across boot volumes, and which filename always wins when both exist.
Last updated
Syslinux reads its config from the directory where it was installed on the boot volume. Standard BIOS installs use a syslinux folder at the boot root. Alternate layouts nest an extlinux folder or target the ESP tree for UEFI.
Two filenames share the same syntax with a fixed precedence order. Library files must match the loader version or menus fail to render. Reinstall the set together whenever the boot volume moves. Menu labels share the config file, so one edit covers every stanza. Reinstall the set after volume moves.

/boot/syslinux/syslinux.cfg
Standard BIOS config beside the loader plus libraries. Alternate extlinux name wins when both exist. UEFI builds use the ESP tree instead.
Frequently asked questions
Should I use syslinux.cfg or extlinux.conf?
Both names work in the same directory with identical syntax. The extlinux name takes precedence when both files sit side by side. Keep exactly one to avoid shadowing confusion on next boot.
Syslinux drops to a boot prompt with no menu. How do I fix it?
Open the boot volume and confirm the config plus matching library files sit beside the loader. Version skew between loader and libraries drops to a bare prompt. Reinstall the same release set together after kernel moves.
