Where Does Tabby Store Its Config?

Tabby terminal config file config.yaml on every OS, and the portable mode that overrides it.

Last updated

Tabby keeps profiles, SSH hosts, appearance, shortcuts and plugins in a single config.yaml: %APPDATA%\Tabby on Windows, ~/Library/Application Support/tabby on Mac (lowercase), ~/.config/tabby on Linux. Deleting it resets the app to its initial state.

Two mix ups dominate support threads. Portable mode wins when a data folder sits next to Tabby.exe, ignoring the paths above. And Tabby the terminal is not TabbyML the AI tool, whose ~/.tabby/config.toml is something else entirely.

Where Tabby stores this, by platform

Windows
%APPDATA%\Tabby\config.yaml

Single YAML for profiles, SSH, appearance and plugins. Portable mode (a data folder next to Tabby.exe) overrides this path. TABBY_CONFIG_DIRECTORY can force another directory.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/tabby/config.yaml

Same YAML contents (note the lowercase folder). GUI launches from the Dock do not inherit shell env, which makes TABBY_CONFIG_DIRECTORY awkward without launchctl.

Linux
~/.config/tabby/config.yaml

Same YAML contents in the standard XDG spot. Do not confuse with TabbyML at ~/.tabby/config.toml or the tmux tool of a similar name.

Frequently asked questions

How do I fully reset Tabby?

Quit Tabby and delete config.yaml from the path above. It regenerates on next launch with initial state. Back the file up first if your SSH profiles took work to build.

Why is TABBY_CONFIG_DIRECTORY ignored on macOS?

Because Dock launched apps do not inherit your shell environment. Set it via launchctl setenv (then relaunch) or accept the default Application Support path.
