Where Does Tampermonkey Store Scripts and Settings?

Tampermonkey keeps installed userscripts and settings in per-profile extension storage, plus optional cloud sync.

Last updated

Tampermonkey stores scripts inside extension storage under the active browser profile. Installed userscripts, their cached copies, and settings all live there. Copying profile folders by hand is fragile because extension IDs differ.

The maintained routes are the settings ZIP and the built-in cloud sync. Script authors update from URLs, so a restored install refreshes itself. Treat the ZIP as the backup and the URLs as the repair path.

Where Tampermonkey stores this, by platform

Windows
%LocalAppData%\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Extensions (per profile)

Scripts and settings per profile. Back up with the settings ZIP. Cloud sync to Drive or WebDAV covers machines you still own. Raw folder copies break on ID mismatches.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/Default/Extensions (per profile)

Same storage model on Mac. Safari and Firefox builds keep data under their own profile trees. One ZIP restores scripts everywhere the extension runs.

Linux
~/.config/google-chrome/Default/Extensions (per profile)

Chromium profiles under ~/.config and Firefox under ~/.mozilla. Same ZIP workflow. Cron-style auto-updates re-fetch scripts from their URLs after restore.

Frequently asked questions

How do I move Tampermonkey scripts to a new browser?

Use the ZIP backup in the extension settings, or enable its cloud sync to Drive, Dropbox, or WebDAV first. The ZIP covers every script plus settings in one file.

Does browser sync back up my userscripts?

Only when its own sync is configured. Browser sync does not reliably carry extension data. The built-in cloud options and the manual ZIP exist precisely for this gap.
