Where Are Terraria Save Files Located?
Terraria save locations on Windows, macOS and Linux, including the folders non-Windows versions use instead of My Games and the Steam Cloud twist.
Last updated
Terraria stores each character as a .plr file and each world as a .wld file, usually with a .bak copy of the same name beside it. Windows puts them under the familiar My Games convention. macOS and Linux do not follow that convention at all, which is why a Windows guide sends Mac and Linux players to a folder that does not exist.
One extra wrinkle: if Steam Cloud sync is enabled, Terraria can keep your characters and worlds inside Steam's own userdata folder instead of the usual location. Every folder named below is a hidden one, so turn on hidden files first.
Where Terraria stores this, by platform
%USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\Terraria
Characters are in Players, worlds are in Worlds. Paste that path into the Explorer address bar or the Run dialog. Two things that catch people out: tModLoader uses a ModLoader subfolder of the same directory, and if the Steam Cloud option is on, the active files live under Steam's userdata\[SteamID3]\105600\remote folder instead.
~/Library/Application Support/Terraria
No My Games folder on Mac. Characters are in Players and worlds in Worlds. In Finder use Go > Go to Folder and paste the path, since Library is hidden by default.
~/.local/share/Terraria
Characters are in Players and worlds in Worlds, both hidden until you show hidden files (Ctrl+H in most file managers). If XDG_DATA_HOME is set on your system, the folder follows that instead. Steam Cloud copies sit under ~/.local/share/Steam/userdata/[SteamID3]/105600/remote.
Frequently asked questions
where are terraria worlds stored on mac
~/Library/Application Support/Terraria/Worlds. Characters are in the Players folder next to it. Open Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder, paste that path and press Return, because the Library folder is hidden and Spotlight will not surface these files.
why is my terraria players folder empty
Either Steam Cloud is holding them, so check Steam's userdata folder under 105600\remote, or you are looking at the wrong Terraria folder. tModLoader players live in Documents\My Games\Terraria\ModLoader\Players on Windows.
what is the .bak file next to my terraria save
Terraria writes a backup copy of every character and world automatically. If the main file is corrupted, delete it and rename the .bak file to the same name without the .bak ending. That is usually the fastest recovery there is.
