Where Does tModLoader Save Worlds and Players?

tModLoader keeps modded Terraria worlds and players in a separate tModLoader folder, away from vanilla save paths.

Last updated

tModLoader never touches vanilla Terraria saves. Worlds go to a tModLoader then Worlds folder. Players go to tModLoader then Players. Each world pairs a .wld with a .twld for mod data, plus .bak copies. Each player pairs a .plr with extra mod files.

The parent differs by OS. Windows uses Documents then My Games then Terraria. Mac uses Library Application Support. Linux uses .local share. Mods, ModSources, and logs sit beside them in the same tModLoader root.

Where TModLoader stores this, by platform

Windows
%USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\Terraria\tModLoader

Worlds in Worlds, players in Players, mods in Mods. OneDrive Documents moves this tree, which breaks hardcoded guides. Check the log line Saves Are Located At on launch.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/Terraria/tModLoader

Same subfolders as Windows. Steam Workshop mods cache nearby. Copy Worlds and Players together so dependencies stay matched.

Linux
~/.local/share/Terraria/tModLoader

Same layout under the XDG data home. Back up .wld with its .twld twin and .plr with its mod sidecars, or the world loads stripped of mod content.

Frequently asked questions

Why are my Terraria worlds missing in tModLoader?

They are in different folders. Vanilla uses Documents My Games Terraria Worlds. Modded uses the tModLoader subfolder. Copying vanilla files into the modded tree works for unmodded worlds, but back up first.

How do I share a tModLoader world with friends?

Send the matching .wld, .twld, and .bak files from Worlds, plus a mod list. Everyone needs the same mods enabled. Autosave runs about every 10 minutes, with Save and Exit forcing a write.
