Where Does TeXmaker Store Settings?

Where TeXmaker keeps texmaker.ini and user completion entries.

Last updated

TeXmaker stores options in texmaker.ini under an xm1 folder: ~/.config/xm1 on Unix and Mac, Roaming xm1 on Windows, plus texmakerapp.ini for interface language. Custom completions append as UserCompletion lines inside the same ini.

The file only persists when the app exits normally. Crashes and forced logouts skip the write, which surprises people expecting live saves. Back up from the Settings File menu rather than copying mid session.

Where TeXmaker stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.config/xm1/texmaker.ini

Holds texmaker.ini with commands, completions and history. Create the folder first on fresh Mac installs or settings never persist. Back up via Options, Settings File menu.

Windows
%APPDATA%\xm1\texmaker.ini

Same xm1 layout under Roaming AppData. UserCompletion lines inside carry custom autocomplete. Close normally before copying or entries go missing.

Frequently asked questions

How do I back up TeXmaker settings?

Back it up from Options, Settings File, Save a copy. The exported ini carries custom Editor UserCompletion lines, which restore through Replace the settings file on the new install.

TeXmaker forgets everything on Mac. Why?

Create ~/.config/xm1 and an empty texmaker.ini inside, then point the Add to PATH field there. Missing folders and wrong permissions cause exactly this silent amnesia on Mac and Linux.
