The Alters keeps its stores strictly apart. Steam builds write plain .sav files under an 11bitstudios folder with your Steam ID in the middle of the path. The Xbox and PC Game Pass build writes into its package wgs container instead, where nothing is human-readable.
For Steam players the drill is simple: back up the whole SaveGames tree with the game closed. For Xbox app players, back up wgs whole and leave the names alone. The two formats do not mix, so pick one store per run and let its cloud handle the rest.
