Where Is the tig Config File?

tig reads a single tigrc file in home on Linux and Mac. The path, what it controls, and repo local overrides.

Last updated

tig keeps everything in one tigrc file in home. Keybindings, colors, view columns and external tool hooks live there. There is no config directory.

Repositories add their own layer through git config. That pairing keeps global taste in home and project quirks beside code. Version control the home file and every terminal matches.

Where tig stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.tigrc

Single file with bindings, colors and view options. Edit with tig quit. Repo local overrides live in that clone's git config rather than here.

macOS
~/.tigrc

Same home file on Mac for terminal builds. App bundle variants may look elsewhere, so a missing file points to packaging rather than lost settings.

Frequently asked questions

How do I move tig settings?

Copy .tigrc to the same relative path on the new machine. Keybindings, colors and view options travel with it. Repository display adapts to each clone, so one file serves every project.

Can I configure one repo differently?

In a .tigrc or git config section inside that repository. Local files win over home config for that clone only. Keep shared bits in home and exceptions beside the repo.
