Where Is the Lazygit Config File?
Where lazygit looks for config.yml on Linux, macOS and Windows, and the variables that move it.
Last updated
Lazygit reads one YAML file: ~/.config/lazygit/config.yml on Linux, ~/Library/Application Support/lazygit/config.yml on macOS, %LOCALAPPDATA%\lazygit\config.yml on Windows. The macOS path catches Unix converts off guard, since lazygit does not use ~/.config there.
The file rarely exists until you create it: defaults live in code, and the YAML only holds your overrides. Copy a starter section from the docs rather than dumping the full default file, which would freeze every unset option at whatever the default was that day.
Where Lazygit stores this, by platform
~/.config/lazygit/config.yml
Respects $XDG_CONFIG_HOME when set. CONFIG_DIR overrides the whole directory. Legacy installs may still read ~/.config/jesseduffield/lazygit/config.yml.
~/Library/Application Support/lazygit/config.yml
Note: Application Support, not .config, on Mac. Reach it in Finder with Go > Go to Folder. Same CONFIG_DIR override as Linux.
%LOCALAPPDATA%\lazygit\config.yml
Paste %LOCALAPPDATA%\lazygit into Explorer. %APPDATA%\lazygit\config.yml works as a fallback. Same CONFIG_DIR override.
Frequently asked questions
My config edits do nothing. Am I editing the wrong file?
The old path used a vendor prefix (jesseduffield/lazygit) and only loads for old installs. New installs read the unprefixed path. If your settings seem ignored, check which of the two files you actually edited.
How do I point lazygit at a config somewhere else?
Set CONFIG_DIR to the folder holding your config (it also stores session state). For just XDG relocation, XDG_CONFIG_HOME works on Unix. Run lazygit --help or check the docs table when a custom setup misbehaves.
