Where Does the toot CLI Store Accounts?

toot the CLI keeps accounts and tokens in config.json under a per-OS config dir with 0600 permissions. Not the iOS app.

Last updated

toot the Mastodon CLI stores everything in one JSON file: registered apps, users with access tokens, and the active user. The file is created with owner-only permissions because tokens live inside it.

The directory follows the OS: roaming AppData on Windows, XDG config home when set, ~/.config/toot otherwise. Not to be confused with Toot! on iOS or Tootle on Linux, which are different programs entirely.

Where toot stores this, by platform

Windows
%APPDATA%\toot\config.json

apps, users, active_user with 0600 perms. Created on first toot login. XDG_CONFIG_HOME respected when set.

macOS
~/.config/toot/config.json

Same file. The TUI (toot tui) is unmaintained; its successor tooi is a separate tool with its own storage.

Linux
~/.config/toot/config.json

Same layout. Multiple accounts share the file with one active_user pointer; switch with the account commands.

Frequently asked questions

How do I log out or move accounts to another machine?

Delete the users entry (or the whole file) and run toot login again. The file holds OAuth tokens with owner-only permissions, so treat any copy like a password.

Is this the same Toot as the iPhone app?

Correct. Toot! (iOS) and Tootle (GTK Linux) are separate apps with their own storage. This post covers only ihabunek/toot, the Python command line client.
