Where Does Toxic Store Config and Profiles?

Toxic chat client config and Tox profile data under ~/.config/tox on Linux.

Last updated

Toxic keeps its world in a tox folder under ~/.config: a .tox profile file with your identity, contacts and history, plus toxic.conf with key bindings, notifications and appearance. The profile is cryptographic identity rather than a login, which raises the stakes on backups.

That identity design shapes every file operation. Copying the profile to a second machine clones you, with both copies fighting over the same ID if run together. Run one copy at a time, back up the .tox file like a private key, and treat toxic.conf as the disposable half that regenerates from defaults.

Where Toxic stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.config/tox

The .tox file is identity plus contacts and must never be shared or duplicated across live machines. toxic.conf holds keys and theme in plain text. Copy both with Toxic closed for migration.

Frequently asked questions

how do i move my toxic identity to a new pc

Copy the whole tox config directory with Toxic closed. The .tox profile holds your identity and contacts while toxic.conf holds keys and appearance, so both halves matter and neither works without the other.

i lost my tox profile file, can i recover it

Lose the .tox file and the identity is gone: no password reset, no recovery email, nothing. Toxic warns about this because Tox IDs are cryptographic, not accounts. Back up the profile file like a key file, which is what it is.
