Where Does Universal Media Server Store Its Profile?

Where UMS keeps its profile folder, UMS.conf database and renderers.

Last updated

UMS centers on a profile folder: UMS.conf for options, a database that can swell into gigabytes, renderers for device profiles, plus debug.log. Windows defaults to ProgramData while Linux uses ~/.config/UMS.

Custom renderer files belong in the profile renderers child where they override shipped ones. Logs print the active profile directory at startup, which settles every which config is live dispute.

Where Universal Media Server stores this, by platform

Windows
C:\ProgramData\UMS\

Default profile root with UMS.conf, database, renderers and debug.log. Reselect with the Select Profile shortcut or profile= argument. Stop the app before editing the conf.

Linux
~/.config/UMS/

Same profile role under XDG config home. Pass the folder as launch argument for custom locations. Renderer overrides go in the renderers child.

Frequently asked questions

How do I move the UMS database off C:?

Launch the Select Profile shortcut and pick the folder, or pass profile=PATH to the exe. Default installs reboot onto C:\ProgramData\UMS otherwise, rebuilding a gigabyte database on the system drive.

Can I edit UMS.conf while UMS runs?

Stop UMS first. It holds UMS.conf in memory and rewrites it on exit, so live edits get clobbered. Linux default is ~/.config/UMS/UMS.conf with renderers beside it.
