Where Does FileTypesMan Store Its Config?

FileTypesMan edits the registry live and keeps its own options in a CFG beside the executable.

Last updated

FileTypesMan manages file associations by editing the registry directly, so its work persists in the system whether the tool remains or not. The tool itself remembers only window layouts in a CFG file.

That split matters for undo. Deleting the tool changes nothing about associations; only its own column choices vanish. Export registry branches before bulk edits to keep a way back.

Where FileTypesMan stores this, by platform

Windows
<folder>\FileTypesMan.cfg

Tool options beside the exe. Associations live in HKCR and HKCU\Software\Classes. Run as admin to edit machine wide types.

Frequently asked questions

how do i back up file associations before editing

Export the relevant HKCR branches from regedit first. FileTypesMan changes apply instantly to the live registry with no built in undo.

does deleting filetypesman restore associations

No. Associations persist in the registry independent of the tool. Only its display preferences disappear with the CFG file.
