Where Does VueScan Store Settings and Scans?

VueScan saves options in vuescan.ini beside your pictures, logs next door, and the license in the registry or a hidden rc file.

Last updated

VueScan keeps its memory in one ini file. Every option choice, crop, color tab, and device setting serializes into vuescan.ini when the program exits. The log file lands beside it, which makes the pair easy to send to support when a scanner misbehaves.

The license lives elsewhere: Windows registry for modern Windows, hidden rc files on Mac and Linux. Scan output defaults into the Pictures tree unless changed. The Help menu Remove command deletes the ini and log, so use it only when starting clean is actually the goal.

Where VueScan stores this, by platform

Windows
%userprofile%\Pictures\VueScan\vuescan.ini

Options and log beside each other. License in HKCU Software VueScan. Keep named presets via File > Save options before reinstalls.

macOS
~/Pictures/VueScan/vuescan.ini

Same ini and log pair in Pictures. License in the home .vuescanrc file. Remove via the VueScan menu only when a clean slate is intended.

Linux
~/Pictures/VueScan/vuescan.ini

Options in the Pictures tree, log in the hidden .vuescan folder. License in ~/.vuescanrc. Package removal leaves the ini behind unless the Help command runs.

Frequently asked questions

How do I move VueScan settings to a new PC?

Copy vuescan.ini to the new machine and place it where VueScan expects it, or use File > Save options to keep named presets. The license itself moves by re-entering the email, serial, and customer number from the purchase receipt.

Why did my VueScan options reset?

Check the Prefs tab for the auto-load setting. On Auto or On, VueScan reloads the last options at start and rewrites the file on exit. On Off it deletes the file on exit and starts from defaults every time, which surprises tinkerers.
