Where Does Wasmtime Install Its Binary?
The Wasmtime installer drops the CLI into $HOME/.wasmtime (bin subfolder), overridable with WASMTIME_HOME, and adds it to your shell PATH.

Wasmtime's install story is deliberately boring: one folder, one binary, one PATH entry. The official script downloads a prebuilt release into $HOME/.wasmtime with the executable in its bin subfolder, then appends that folder to your shell configuration. No package manager metadata to chase. The folder also carries the release license and readme, so its contents are self-explanatory when you stumble on it later.
Set WASMTIME_HOME before running the script to choose a different home. Everything (binary, readme, license) nests under it the same way. Re-running the script later upgrades in place.
Where Wasmtime stores this, by platform
~/.wasmtime/bin
The executable sits in the bin subfolder. WASMTIME_HOME overrides the location; the installer still appends the matching bin path to your shell rc file.
~/.wasmtime/bin
Identical layout to Linux via the same install script. If wasmtime vanishes from PATH inside containers, check what $HOME resolved to during install versus at runtime.
Frequently asked questions
Installed Wasmtime but the shell cannot find it?
Check that $WASMTIME_HOME/bin (or $HOME/.wasmtime/bin) is on your PATH and reopen the shell. The installer appends to your rc file, but existing terminals do not pick that up until restarted.
How do I uninstall Wasmtime?
Remove the install directory and delete the PATH lines the installer added to your shell rc file. That is the whole uninstall; nothing else is scattered around the system.
