Where Does Whisky Store Bottles?

Whisky keeps bottles in its Library Containers folder, with GPTK libraries and logs in sibling support paths.

Last updated

Whisky scatters a handful of folders across Library. Bottles (each a fake Windows machine with drive_c inside) live in the Containers bundle folder, one UUID style subfolder per bottle unless you chose a custom path. Game Porting Toolkit files sit in Application Support Libraries. Logs sit in Logs.

The app stopped receiving Wine upgrades in 2025 and now gets minor fixes only, which matters when Steam inside a bottle breaks after updates. Bottle folders themselves stay portable: copy one to the same path on another Mac and it runs.

Where Whisky stores this, by platform

macOS
~/Library/Containers/com.isaacmarovitz.Whisky/Bottles

One UUID folder per bottle with drive_c inside. Custom location bottles live outside this tree. Never delete the container without checking Reveal in Finder.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/com.isaacmarovitz.Whisky/Libraries

GPTK runtime plus app support files. The whisky CLI symlink lands in /usr/local/bin when installed. Logs sit in the Logs sibling folder.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find one Whisky bottle folder?

Pick the bottle and use Reveal in Finder to confirm the real folder. Default bottles live in the Containers path below, while custom ones live wherever you put them.

How do I store bottles on an external drive?

Choose a new path in Settings and Whisky creates bottles there going forward. Existing bottles stay put and must move by hand or export import.

Is Whisky still usable after discontinuation?

Yes for simple needs. The project stopped full Wine upgrades in 2025, so aging games keep working while new releases increasingly need alternatives.
