Where Does WinDirStat Store Settings?
WinDirStat is largely portable, keeping settings in an INI beside the exe or in AppData depending on install.
Last updated
WinDirStat keeps almost no state. Language, treemap colors, and cleanup commands live in a small config file that sits beside the executable in portable use or under per user AppData for installed builds. Scans themselves never save; every launch rewalks the disk.
That makes migration trivial: copy the program folder or the config file and behavior follows. Run elevated for system folders, otherwise permission denied gaps skew the treemap. There is no scan history database to back up at all.
Where WinDirStat stores this, by platform
Beside windirstat.exe (portable) or %APPDATA%\WinDirStat
Exact file may vary by build (INI style config). Prefer copying the whole program folder for portable installs. No scan archives exist to migrate.
Frequently asked questions
Does WinDirStat save scan results?
No. Each run scans fresh from disk. Export screenshots or reports at scan time if you need a record for later comparison.
Why do folder sizes look wrong in WinDirStat?
It ran without elevation and skipped protected folders. Relaunch as administrator for complete trees, then compare like for like.
