Where Is the Windows Icon Cache?

The iconcache database files on Windows, the classic rebuild command, and when clearing actually helps.

Last updated

Windows caches icons in database files under LocalAppData so Explorer never renders every icon from scratch. Modern builds split the cache into several iconcache files in an Explorer subfolder; older ones used a single IconCache.db.

Blank, wrong or frozen icons almost always trace back to these files. Deleting them with Explorer restarted forces a clean rebuild, which fixes most icon corruption in one step. The classic ie4uinit.exe -show command still triggers the same rebuild on current Windows.

Where Windows stores this, by platform

Windows
%localappdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer

Holds iconcache_16.db through iconcache_256.db plus live tile variants. Older builds used %localappdata%\IconCache.db instead. Delete the files and restart Explorer, or run ie4uinit.exe -show to rebuild.

Frequently asked questions

How do I rebuild the Windows icon cache?

Close Explorer windows, delete the iconcache files in the Explorer folder, and restart Explorer from Task Manager. Running ie4uinit.exe -show achieves the same rebuild without manual deletion.

Will clearing the icon cache delete my files?

No. These databases hold rendered icon images only, never your documents or shortcuts. Explorer redraws everything on next browse, slightly slower the first time.
