Where Does Windows Scan Save Scanned Documents?

Where the Windows Scan app saves scanned documents by default, and how to change the folder.

Last updated

Windows Scan keeps one setting that matters: the save location for finished scans, defaulting to a Scanned Documents folder under Pictures. Each scan lands there as an image or PDF with the settings you picked.

App state itself lives in its package folder under LocalAppData, but scans are the part worth backing up. Change the folder in Scan settings before a big batch; moving it later leaves earlier scans behind.

Where Windows Scan stores this, by platform

Windows
C:\Users\[Username]\Pictures\Scanned Documents

Default output folder for finished scans under Pictures. Change it in Scan settings before batch jobs. App state sits in the package LocalState beside it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I change where scans are saved?

Open Scan settings before scanning and pick a new save location. The choice sticks for later scans. Already saved files stay where they are; only new scans use the new folder.

What file types does Scan save?

The app saves common formats plus source data for its own preview. Keep the originals when color accuracy matters later. PDFs and PNGs carry the finished pages.
