Where Does WindTerm Store Profiles and Sessions?

Where WindTerm keeps its profiles, saved sessions, and config inside the portable .windterm folder.

Last updated

WindTerm is fully portable: a .windterm folder beside the executable holds profiles, sessions, themes, color schemes, and config. Nothing touches the registry or AppData.

That locality is the whole story. Backups mean one folder copy, syncing means pointing the folder at a cloud drive, and fresh machines mean unzip plus paste. The only files outside it are SSH agent sockets and jump host binaries you installed separately. Session folders sort by protocol. The layout survives Windows reinstalls from a second drive.

Where WindTerm stores this, by platform

Windows
<exe-dir>\.windterm

profiles/, sessions/, themes/, and config files here beside windterm.exe. Keep it out of OneDrive if concurrent machines fight over locks. Upgrades overwrite the exe but preserve this folder.

macOS
<exe-dir>/.windterm (portable)

Same portable layout as Windows when run under Wine or ports; native macOS use is uncommon. The folder travels across machines on a USB stick with zero install steps.

Frequently asked questions

how do i move windterm to a new pc

Copy the whole .windterm folder to the same spot next to the new exe. Profiles, sessions, themes, and keys travel together since everything lives beside the binary. No registry or AppData involvement means xcopy is the installer.

where are windterm profiles and sessions

In profiles/ under .windterm (terminal looks) and sessions/ for saved connections. SSH keys often sit in a keys folder nearby; copy those too or connections prompt for passwords. The .windterm root is creatable anywhere the exe runs.

can i relocate the windterm data folder

Yes through Settings > Preferences, which writes the same files the manual copy moves. The GUI edits profiles in place, so hand editing JSON is only for bulk changes. Restart the tab (not the app) to apply most edits.
