Where Does Winetricks Store Cache and Verbs?

Winetricks caches installers in ~/.cache/winetricks and applies verbs into the current WINEPREFIX. Point it per prefix.

Last updated

Winetricks has two halves: a download cache and a target prefix. The cache under ~/.cache/winetricks holds installers shared across every prefix. The prefix named by WINEPREFIX receives the actual DLLs and settings.

Most Winetricks accidents come from the wrong prefix. The tool acts on ~/.wine unless told otherwise. Name the prefix in every command or check it first with echo.

Where Winetricks stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.cache/winetricks

Shared installer cache. Safe to delete, re-downloads as needed. Verbs themselves install into the prefix, not here.

Frequently asked questions

How do I use Winetricks with a custom prefix?

Run WINEPREFIX=/path/to/prefix winetricks. Verbs install into that prefix only. Forgetting the variable sprays DLLs into ~/.wine instead.

Can I clear the Winetricks download cache?

Delete files under ~/.cache/winetricks. They re-download on next use. Keep them if bandwidth is tight, since some redistributables are large.

How do I see what Winetricks installed?

Yes. winetricks list-installed shows verbs per prefix. Compare before and after when an installer misbehaves.
