Where Does WinRAR Store Settings?
WinRAR keeps settings in the registry by default, with an optional INI redirect and support files in AppData.
Last updated
WinRAR splits its state three ways and documents all of them. Day to day settings live in the registry under HKCU Software WinRAR. Creating an empty WinRAR.ini redirects that access into a portable text file instead.
Support files ignore the redirect question and use AppData: license key, themes, and exported settings land in a WinRAR folder there. The program folder serves as fallback for each, which is why stray keys in Program Files cause the classic already licensed confusion.
Where WinRAR stores this, by platform
%APPDATA%\WinRAR
License key, themes, and settings.reg live here. Create WinRAR.ini in this folder or beside the exe to redirect registry settings into a portable file.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\WinRAR
Day to day settings without an INI redirect. Export via Options and Import and Export when migrating rather than copying keys by hand.
Frequently asked questions
How do I export settings to another PC?
Use Options, Import and Export, Create WinRAR.ini file. That dumps current registry settings into an INI you can carry. Drop the file beside WinRAR.exe or in %APPDATA%\WinRAR on the new machine to activate it.
Where should the license key file go?
WinRAR searches both, with AppData winning. A license placed in Program Files gets ignored while an older one sits in AppData, which explains mysterious unregistered states after upgrades.
