Where Does Wire Store Local Data?

Wire desktop is an Electron app holding messages in a Chromium IndexedDB store. Data folders per OS and what sits inside them.

Last updated

Wire desktop wraps the web client in Electron, so messages live in a Chromium IndexedDB database rather than a tidy chat file. The store holds conversations, events, users and keys in Dexie object tables.

Attachments cache separately under Service Worker storage in encrypted form. Window size and position get their own small config files beside the databases. None of this is meant for hand editing; it matters for backup, migration and forensics.

Where Wire stores this, by platform

Windows
%APPDATA%\Wire

IndexedDB data under IndexedDB\https_app.wire.com_0.indexeddb.leveldb, window config under config, logs under logs. The program itself installs to LocalAppData\Wire, which holds binaries rather than your data.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/Wire

Same Electron user data layout as Windows. Message content sits in the IndexedDB leveldb store, attachments in Service Worker CacheStorage.

Linux
~/.config/Wire

Same layout under the XDG config home. Local data is only one side of Wire security: the whitepaper model keeps server and transport protections independent of these files.

Frequently asked questions

is Wire local message data encrypted?

Messages rest in the Chromium IndexedDB store and attachments in cache storage, with attachments encrypted. Anyone asking after the Signal plaintext key comparison should read Wire's security whitepaper for the exact at rest posture.

how do i move Wire to a new computer?

Copy the whole Wire user data folder above to the same path on the new machine with the app closed. Re login afterwards, since device identity and keys re register on the new hardware.
