Where Does XBPS Store Packages and Cache?
Void Linux XBPS package cache, repo configs and package databases.
Last updated
XBPS (X Binary Package System) keeps downloaded packages in the system cache directory and repository keys plus mirror lists in the xbps.d folders. Installed package metadata lives in the local package database the tools query.
Cache management is explicit: downloads accumulate until removed, which matters on small root partitions. Repository configuration splits between the system directory and per install overrides. Mirrors change with one config edit and a sync.
Where XBPS stores this, by platform
/var/cache/xbps (downloads) plus /etc/xbps.d and /usr/share/xbps.d (repos)
Clean with xbps-remove -O for obsolete packages. Current repo DBs sync with xbps-install -S. Installed package records live under /var/db/xbps. Mirror config in xbps.d overrides defaults.
Frequently asked questions
how do I free space used by XBPS cache
Run xbps-remove -O to drop cached packages no longer installed, and xbps-remove -o for orphaned dependencies. Check /var/cache/xbps size before and after on tight partitions.
where are XBPS repository mirrors configured
In repository files under /etc/xbps.d (admin overrides) falling back to /usr/share/xbps.d defaults. Edit or add a mirror file, then xbps-install -S to resync the package databases.
