Where Does Xonotic Store Config and Demos?

Where Xonotic keeps config, demos, screenshots, and downloaded maps on each OS.

Last updated

Xonotic keeps user data in one folder per OS: ~/.xonotic on Linux, Documents-adjacent roots on Windows, Application Support on macOS. Config, demos, screenshots, and downloaded maps all live underneath.

The engine derives from DarkPlaces Quake roots, so veterans will feel at home: config.cfg at the top, data/ for content. Back up the folder whole; cherry-picking config without data breaks map-dependent binds.

Where Xonotic stores this, by platform

Windows
%USERPROFILE%\Documents\xonotic\data

config.cfg plus demos/, screenshots/, data/ for downloads. Documents root varies by Windows version; check the live path in-game if empty.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/xonotic/data

Same config plus data layout. Use Go to Folder in Finder since Library is hidden.

Linux
~/.xonotic/data

Classic dotfolder (config.cfg, demos, data). Server downloads land in data/ keyed by host.

Frequently asked questions

How do I migrate Xonotic settings and demos?

Copy the whole data dir (config.cfg plus demos/, screenshots/, data/) to the new machine. Keep the game version close; demos recorded in one release often desync in another. Maps from servers re-download automatically.

Where are downloaded maps?

Downloaded content lands in data/ beside config.cfg, keyed by server. Delete stale map packs there to reclaim space; the game fetches them again on join. Your binds in config.cfg survive content wipes.
