Where Does Yomitan Store Dictionaries and Settings?
Yomitan extension storage with imported dictionaries and settings backup.
Last updated
Yomitan (the Yomichan successor) keeps imported dictionaries, options and Anki templates in browser extension storage, which can run to hundreds of megabytes with full JMdict and kanji sets. Everything works offline once imported.
Browsers evict extension data under storage pressure, silently breaking lookups. Enable persistent storage in Yomitan settings (Chromium grants unlimitedStorage automatically; Firefox may need the manual toggle, unavailable on some Android builds). Keep the original dictionary zips: reimporting beats redownloading on metered links.
Where Yomitan stores this, by platform
Browser extension storage (dictionaries plus settings; keep source zips)
Back up from Yomitan settings export and stash dictionary archives in Documents. Reinstalling the browser profile wipes extension storage; reimport from the zips afterward.
Browser extension storage (same backup strategy as Windows)
Settings export covers options and Anki handles; dictionaries reimport from archives. Enable persistent storage to survive low disk evictions.
Browser profile folder (extension storage under the browser data dir)
Same export and reimport flow. Profile backups (Firefox profile folder, Chromium User Data) carry Yomitan along with everything else when copied whole with browsers closed.
Frequently asked questions
why did Yomitan stop finding words
The browser evicted extension storage under disk pressure and deleted the imported dictionaries. Reimport the zips, then enable persistent storage in settings to prevent repeats.
how do I move Yomitan to a new computer
Export settings from Yomitan and copy the dictionary zip archives over. Install the extension fresh, import settings, then import dictionaries. Copying whole browser profiles works too with browsers closed.
