Where Does Zeal Store Docsets and Config?
Zeal docset library and config file paths on Linux and Windows, plus how to move the library safely.
Last updated
Zeal keeps downloaded documentation in a docsets folder and UI settings in a small config file. Linux stores docsets under ~/.local/share/Zeal/Zeal/docsets with settings in ~/.config/Zeal/Zeal.conf. Each docset is a folder with its own SQLite index.
Windows follows the local app data convention. Docsets live under %LOCALAPPDATA%\Zeal\Zeal\docsets with Zeal.conf beside them. Copy the docsets folder to migrate offline docs. The config file is tiny and safe to drop when layouts break or paths go stale.
Where Zeal stores this, by platform
~/.local/share/Zeal/Zeal/docsets
One folder per docset, each with Contents/Resources/docSet.dsidx. Respects XDG data home when set. Copy this tree to move offline docs between machines.
~/.config/Zeal/Zeal.conf
Window layout and docset storage path live here. Delete with Zeal closed to reset the UI. Docsets themselves survive a config reset.
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Zeal\Zeal\docsets
Same internal layout as Linux. Change the path under Preferences to relocate. Move existing files first so Zeal finds them on restart.
Frequently asked questions
how do i move the Zeal docset folder
Open Edit, Preferences, and change the Docset storage path, then restart Zeal. Move the existing docsets folder to the new location first. Zeal rescans on launch and picks up the moved sets.
how do i remove a Zeal docset completely
Delete the docset folder under Docsets and remove it from the Available list. Config in Zeal.conf keeps window state, so a broken layout can be fixed by deleting that file with Zeal closed.
